Manul cats, also known as Pallas’ cats, are a wild cat species that can be found in Central Asia’s grasslands and montane steppes. These cats have a distinct appearance with their round pupils, short legs, and flat-looking faces that sport wide-set ears, which make them ideal for creating some of the funniest expressions in the feline kingdom. Their scientific name, Otocolobus, means “ugly-eared,” which could be why these fluffy creatures always appear annoyed.
Despite the Manul’s large appearance, it is only the fluff of its fur that makes it appear larger, as it is about the same size and weight as a domestic cat. These adorable cats thrive at high altitudes of up to 15,000ft and prefer the cold climate that comes with it. However, they are not fast runners due to their short, stubby legs and will opt to hide in crevasses under boulders when necessary.
While the Pallas’ cat’s expressive face might make it seem like an exciting pet, its solitary and wild nature, as well as its high mortality rate at low altitudes, mean that they are primarily restricted to professional zoos.
