When reports came in about a whale trapped in a fishing net off the Balearic island of Mallorca, rescuers with the Palma de Mallorca’s Aquarium marine rescue centre jumped into action.
According to EuroNews, the humpback whale was around 3 miles off the shore and was struggling with the illegal net.
Not only was the whale entangled in it from head to toe, but it was so tight that she couldn’t even open her mouth!
Four divers arrived at the scene and prepared for the rescue. According to one of the divers, 32-year-old Gigi Torras, the whale seemed alarmed for a few seconds when the divers approached, but she quickly relaxed.
“I don’t know, call me crazy but I think she knew we were there to help her…She just relaxed and we started working,” Torras said, according to EuroNews.
The divers were able to slowly cut the net from the whale, working from her head down to her tail. The rescue mission took a whole 45 minutes, but eventually, the whale was free.
After she wiggled out of the last of the net, she hung around for a few minutes to rest and regain her strength. Then, she was on her way back into the open water.
It’s a moment Torras recalls as “out of this world.”
