Cathy Buckman, a kitten rescuer from Sanford, North Carolina, was looking for a couple of newborns at a local cat shelter when she heard wailing from one of the cages. When she turned to look at the source of the noise, she noticed a little blind kitten urgently attempting to catch her attention.
“This small child came directly from the streets to the shelter.” Katie stated, Cathy Buckman, a kitten rescuer from Sanford, North Carolina, was looking for a couple of newborns at a local cat shelter when she heard wailing from one of the cages.
When she turned to look at the source of the noise, she noticed a little blind kitten urgently attempting to catch her attention.” I came for two other kittens, but I couldn’t leave him wailing plaintively.”
The cat meowed even louder as soon as the woman arrived, but it didn’t seem like it. She rushed to the veterinarian facility with all three kittens.
“He was tired, scared and unresponsive to anything but food.”
Katie took him home and wrapped him in her best heated blanket. Her dog Burt came to support the guest and kept him company from the very beginning.
“He was radically different the next day.” I started licking my face and toying with some toys… Katy describes him as “a lively, friendly, and silly cat.”
Microphthalmia, a congenital disease characterized by unusually tiny eyes, has rendered the newborn absolutely blind. However, the kitten does not appear to be affected by the condition.
Cathy sought assistance from the Odd Cat Sanctuary in Salem, Massachusetts, knowing that he would require particular care and that his house would need to be adequately equipped to deal with any potential complications.
Tara Kay, the organization’s founder, was ready to embrace the blind youngster with open arms. “We provide assistance to ‘problem’ kittens and cats who are frequently ignored.”
Melvin was his name.
“He’s the ideal pet.” He enjoys eating and playing, and as soon as you take him up, he begins purring, explains Tara. “He yells loudly to attract attention, but as soon as he does, he stops.”
Melvin was underweight when he arrived at the shelter. He miraculously became all thicker in a few days, under the care of new guardians, and now flaunts a tiny belly.
The black-and-white cutie manages to get by without his eyes, relying on his other senses to the utmost.
In this video, Melvin tells his story:
With his incredible hearing and sense of smell, he can traverse in space and pinpoint the exact location of a moving object.
“He listens with his nostrils flared. “He’s a courageous guy who doesn’t appear to be scared of anything,” Tara says.
Melvin doesn’t know what it’s like to have sight. He “sees” the world differently.
This playful, funny and inquisitive lad doesn’t think he’s any different from other cats.
Melvin is ecstatic with his new digs. He even “viewed” the premises from some of his favorite vantage points.
Cathy adds, “I’m so grateful I was able to save him and change his fate.” Everyone who is committed to our shared goal of animal care is doing everything they can. In my own case, I do what I can and hope to contribute at least a bit.”
Melvin’s scream caught Cathy’s attention, after which the kitten’s life changed forever.
From hopelessly wandering the streets, he moved on to luxurious conditions – this boy knows exactly what he wants from life!
