Jennie Wilklow, a resident of Highland, New York, eagerly awaited the arrival of her daughter. She and her husband were overjoyed as they held their precious bundle of joy for the first time. Countless ultrasounds and doctor’s checkups had reassured them of their baby’s well-being.
Little did they know that their darling Anna would be born with a disability that would forever change their lives.
Anna had harlequin ichthyosis, a rare condition characterized by thick, diamond-shaped plates and deep cracks on her delicate skin. Despite the doctors’ concerns about her survival, Anna defied the odds and thrived. “She embodied pure beauty,” Jennie proudly declared.
Sadly, there is no cure for harlequin ichthyosis. Daily care involves multiple showers and meticulous moisturization to keep Anna comfortable. “Coating her in Vaseline and bathing her for hours became regular routines,” Jennie shared.
It may seem insignificant, but one of the greatest challenges for Jennie was not being able to dress Anna in adorable outfits like other babies. This frustration weighed heavily on her heart.
To raise awareness about harlequin ichthyosis, Jennie created an Instagram page called “Harlequin Diva” and shared pictures of Anna. Through her posts, she sheds light on the everyday challenges and provides a glimpse into the reality of raising a child with this condition.
“Anna’s story has touched the hearts of many because she embodies perfection in its purest form,” Jennie explained. For her, fulfilling these daily responsibilities is second nature. “With each new milestone, the world celebrates with us,” she told Cafe Mom.
Jennie now realizes that Anna was given to her because of her immense love for her daughter. They were destined to be together, ready to redefine the world’s perception of true beauty.
Anna is beautiful just the way she is, and she is fortunate to have parents who go above and beyond to ensure she leads a fulfilling life.
