For 3 hours woman stays with trapped horse – then a farmer does everything he can to save its life

Individuals who have experienced the ocean are well aware of its unpredictable nature. One aspect that should never be taken lightly is the tide; it can pose significant dangers if one is caught in an unfavorable situation.

The tide has the potential to catch individuals and animals off guard, engulfing them within seconds, and in certain instances, it may result in a prolonged and agonizing demise. This was nearly the fate of an 18-year-old horse named Astro.

Nicole Graham, the owner of Astro, along with her daughter, was riding their horses along the beach near Geelong, located south of Melbourne, Australia. However, they soon encountered soft sand, which transformed the ground beneath them into a treacherous muddy trap.

While Nicole’s daughter and her horse managed to escape, she and Astro became increasingly ensnared in the mud. Astro found himself submerged up to his neck in clay, facing the peril of suffocation. Nicole devoted three hours to remain by Astro’s side, engaged in a desperate struggle for survival.

The more time Astro spent in the mud, the more desperate the situation got. During this time, Nicole had to keep her 1,000-pound (450 kg) horse calm to stop him from sinking deeper into the mud. After three hours, Astro was close to suffocating and faced the possibility of dying of thirst and fatigue. In addition, the tide was on its way in.

Fortunately, Nicole’s daughter managed to reach safety and summon assistance. Eventually, a rescue team along with a veterinarian arrived at the location. To alleviate Astro’s panic, the veterinarian administered a sedative. Throughout the ordeal, Nicole remained by Astro’s side, speaking to him in an effort to keep him calm. Although a helicopter was requested, it was unable to assist due to Astro being trapped too deeply in the mud, making it impossible to secure a rope around him for extraction.

The rescue team faced significant challenges in their attempts to free Astro, and as the tide drew nearer, Nicole’s anxiety grew. The team endeavored to excavate the horse, but the ground had turned to a quicksand-like consistency, rendering it too unstable for effective digging.

Then, a farmer arrived at the scene on his tractor and a last ditch attempt was made to free the horse using a rope attached to his vehicle.
